    Advice about carpet cleaning

We are about to have installed long over due new nylon plush carpet.

Problem is we have an older dog that has digestive accidents (runs) once and a while.  My wife uses Nature's miracle on our old carpet and
you can always see where she used the stuff...

Since there are so many professionals here I thought I would ask the question:

What products/equipment should we have on hand for the next "surprise" which will be on new carpet  that will clean, deodorize, and be safe on the carpet and won't be noticed afterward?

Not professional advice but here is what I do at home.  We have had puppies in the last year & the best thing we had was a spotter like resolve & one of those small spotter machines like the grean machine or something

The best thing to do is get it as soon as possible. Bri is right about the extracter thing. Try to clean up as much of it as possible before putting any chemicals or water on it. Use something to scrape up the solid stuff. Like a disposable plastic spoon or knife. You should try and purchase an enzyme type cleaner. Enzymes will break down most of the organic matter. You can use an extraction machine with water to rinse the rest. Stay away from Resolve. Like I said earlier, the sooner you get to it the better. This is it in a nutshell. I could get into more detail. That can be for a later post.

You can purchase a product called FOLEX from Lowe's that will completely remove any pet stains. The key is to use enough product to reach the padding below the carpet. You can spray it on and leave it, or you can use it with an extractor such as a rainbow steam cleaner or rug doctor or whatever extractor you normally use. Another good product is Thermax Bio-Enzyme stain remover. I don't know if you can get this without a "connection" though, lol. It's awesome. But the FOLEX works well too. :)

    Re: Advice about carpet cleaning

I guess the Nature's Miracle will do the trick but having trouble understanding a few things.  I hear blot,  don't rub yet those portable homeowner machines scrub the carpet?   Just what gives?

Blotting tends to pull up more soil. Rubbing  grinds the soil deeper and deeper into the backing of the carpet making it harder and harder to remove. It also pushes the soil further and further away from the original area.

I thought people were using the little hand held wand on the carpet machine. I'm not sure what machine would have the same force that a human being would use when rubbing. Either way. Rubbing is bad. Blotting is good.

I know nothing about the chemicals that where mentioned. I get all of my stuff from the carpet cleaning supply store. I am an IICRC trained carpet cleaner and have taken many other courses in spot and stain removal. Getting rid of *** and urine are very difficult processes. If you wait too long to clean it up it makes removal even more difficult. No one product on the market does it all. When a pet makes a mess the odds of resoiling in that spot increase.

    Re: Advice about carpet cleaning

NEVER rub!!!!!  Rubbing will push the problem OUTward!  You don't want that.  Blot.  Machines scrub the fibers in place..they don't push as rubbing with your hands will do.  See the difference??

NEVER use resolve!!!!!!  And Nature's Miracle just doesn't work!  (Please know, I have over 9 years as a professional floor care specialist and I speciallized in stains and pet urine.  NOBODY knows more about these things than I do.  And yes, I toot my own horn.  There is NO stain I cant get out of a carpet... (and if there is, I patch it. LOL)  That is the worst thing you can do for any carpet.  Resolve is a soap.  It leaves a residue on the carpet and will get dirty quicker.  Simple solution for almost all spills, spots, etc...:  1 quart water.  3 tbsp white vinnegar.  1 tsp DAWN.   You can also use 2 tsp powder TIDE instead of the Dawn.  This solution will work on just about anything.  Spray on libberally and let set for 2-3 minutes.  Then BLOT!

For pet urine, do this:   (works best if you have either a TON of towels, or a wet/dry shop vac...or carpet extractor) locate the boundries of the spot.  NOTE:  that the spot UNDER the carpet is about 3-5 times the size of the spot on TOP of the carpet.  If you have a 6 inch spot on top, get about a gallon to 2 gallons of water (1/8 cup powder tide and 1/8 cup white vinnegar per gallon).  place towels around the spot about a foot outside in a ring.  Place heavy books on these towels.  Starting on the outside, near the towels, start pouring your solution.  Pour from the outside, and work your way in to the initial spot. Know that the water is NOT going to be a problem as you may think.  It just won't.  Once you have all the water poured on, use your hands to 'knead' the water towards the center.  Do this all around the area d then let it sit for 5 mintues.  This is allowing the solution to absorb slightly into the sub floor.  This is NOT a bad thing...  Now, use your extractor to suck the water back up from the center.  Press hard on it and extract for 10-15 seconds.  Then move the extractor a few inches out and do again.  Follow this around the circle.  Once that is done, do it again.  Now, cover the area with a couple towels doubled or trippled over. Place heavy books or objects on the towels.  Leave them there for at least 12 hours.  take up the towels and put down new ones doubled over. Place your books on them again and leave for another 12 hours.  You are now all done.  :)

If this sounds like a pain in the ass, you now know why I get $100-$150.00 for a pet spot.  I can get rid of them in about 20 minutes.  However, severely stained carpet where they go often can take a day or two to fix.  And yes, it CAN be fixed without replacing the carpet.  May replace the pad, and treat the subfloor with BIN, but it can be fixed.  Something like that can run 300-600.00.  I can even do orientals with amazing results..

    Re: Advice about carpet cleaning

There are many methods of az carpet cleaning to choose from. The method that is right for depends on the traffic your carpet endures and spills and spots children or pets leave. You must consider people's and pet's allergies as well as the time it will put your carpeted area out of commission for the cleaning process. Different kinds of carpets are more compatible with certain methods.
